If you’re on a health care plan with a high deductible, saving money on health care is important.

One way to reduce costs is to ask if you can do routine tests at home.

You should absolutely follow your doctor’s advice when it comes to medical tests. However, your doctor may not immediately consider these at-home alternatives. Let them know you have a high-deductible plan so they’ll know you’d like to save money if possible.

Insure.com gives some examples of home-based tests, like Watermark Medical’s Home Sleep Study program or AliveCor’s Heart Monitor.

If an in-home test isn’t available, you can still ask if lab work, imaging, or other tests can be done at a third-party facility. These centers aren’t affiliated with your doctor’s office and can save you a serious chunk of change if you are paying out of pocket or have a high deductible.

Again, ask your doctor if these options are available to you and if the doctor is comfortable with such alternative testing in your individual case.

The doctor is possibly writing orders out of habit, and letting her or him know you’d like a less expensive option is completely within your rights as a patient.
